White Crate is proud to present WC02, a show on July 8th curated by Mae Powell – generous spirit, jazz pixie, psychedelic indie folk chanteuse, and the Bay’s rainbow-embodied ambassador of peace and magic. WC02 is the second in a quarterly party series curated by Bay Area artists, and for this outing we’re being treated to live performances by Everyone is Dirty, The Breathing Room, Marika Christine, and Arts and Crafts – plus DJ Stanley Ipkuss.

NATASHA (drums): “I was surrounded by music at a young age since my dad was always playing guitar in rock bands or repairing amps at our house. The sounds of 60’s & 70’s rock like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix were crucial to me starting out. I had no idea how to play an instrument but I would sing my own melodies, clap my hands and drum on objects to fulfill my vision.”
“I finally obtained an electronic drum kit at age 10 & started playing through headphones to music I loved. Remembering how out-of-reach it felt to be in a band as a kid, it feels extra special to have the musical connections that I do now.”
STEVO (bass): The Bay is a magnet in strange turmoil. Natural magic, gripped too tight. Lately, it has been pretty inhospitable to devoted artists while becoming a technocratic dystopia, so the music that comes out of it is tempered with weirdness and rebelliousness. There’s camaraderie unlike anywhere else and the bay allows me to be myself unapologetically. What a privilege steeped in struggle and tragedy. It’s the antithesis to Los Angeles.”
CHRIS (guitar/vocals): “My biggest influence right now are singers. All types of voices. I’ve been working on my own singing and find it fascinating how much variety there is in the human voice. From Nina Simone to Kurt Cobain to Elliott Smith to Steve Perry to John Lennon to Dizzy Gillespie to Jello Biafra, I’m in love with all types of storytelling.”
SIVAN (electric violin/vocals): “My relationship to music started when I was a little girl. My parents were from the middle east and were afraid I would be corrupted by American culture so they wouldn’t let me listen to any music except anything classical, Cat Stevens, and Scott Joplin. That plan exploded in their faces. But my Turkish dad taught me violin and that’s the best gift he ever gave me.”
