“The Bay is a place that encourages open-mindedness.” Interview with the Breathing Room

White Crate is proud to present WC02, a show on July 8th curated by Mae Powell – generous spirit, jazz pixie, psychedelic indie folk chanteuse, and the Bay’s rainbow-embodied ambassador of peace and magic. WC02 is the second in a quarterly party series curated by Bay Area artists, and for this outing we’re being treated to live performances by Everyone is Dirty, The Breathing Room, Marika Christine, and Arts and Crafts – plus DJ Stanley Ipkuss.

Read on for a special interview with The Breathing Room.

How did your relationship to music first start?

I think for all of us, our relationship to music started at a very young age, whether it be from piano lessons to being introduced to a lot of classic music through our parents or wanting to be in a band and picking up a guitar for the first time.

What’s the biggest inspiration behind your music right now?

I think we’re all inspired by a lot of different things, but our music tends to be a balance between a lot of modern indie and psychedelic music as well as jazz and soul music of the past. It’s been a lot of L’eclair, Mildlife, Alice Phoebe Lou, Erykah Badu, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and The Beatles of course. Stuff like that.

How does the Bay Area influence you or the music you make?

The Bay is our home and the people and places around us make a big impact on us. I think the presence of so many types of music everywhere you go in the Bay has contributed to the eclectic mix of sounds that our music is. We’re able to see great jazz music all the time, Latin music everywhere, big names always come through the Bay and of course all of the great local and underground acts that make up the scene that we’re very lucky to be a part of. A lot of our friends are in such amazing local bands that we feel very lucky to be able to be part of a scene like this and be fans of our friends’ music. Plus, the Bay is a place that encourages open-mindedness, which has really helped to shape our music.
