“So until my final days
In longing I will roam
Upon this third stone from the sun
The only home I’ve ever known”
The California Honeydrops, one of the most beloved local Americana outfits, show off their musical dexterity on their short and sweet latest album, Redwood Highway. Though recorded in Oakland and San Francisco, the album reflects the band’s long days on tour, not just because of their tight musical chops but also through the songs of roaming and longing. The songs stretch out in multiple soulful directions, with the septet playing raindrop-pattering-guitar country blues (“Wind Howling”), syncopated stomps (“Do It Like That”), and minimal ballads (“Only Home”, “Redwood Highway”).
