Five tracks of cold, dark post-punk embody the self-titled, debut EP from Nuevo Cuerpo, a project by Andres Ruiz (False Figure, Adrenochrome). Influenced by both La Movida Madrileña—Madrid’s post-dictator countercultural movement that led to a rise in synth pop and new wave in the mid to late 1970s—as well as Mexican and Latin American love songs, the EP hits hard with crunchy drum machines, throbbing funkish bass, and cutting electric guitar from its very first moments on “Alma Malcriada.” Lofi and despairing, Ruiz sings in Spanish “of loss and love,” providing post-punk’s classic counterpoint of painful lyrics with upbeat, danceable, addictive music. It may sound as rough as a demo, but it doesn’t need anything else to be adored. Cassettes of the new EP are available now from Transylvanian Recordings.
