Marathon by Maria BC

“Sometimes when I write songs, I imagine the voice that’s singing is a kind of spirit. Someone from up above or down below calling out to us in warning – ‘You can’t go on like this.’” — Maria BC

Quiet and potent, Maria BC sings with a voice that gently topples you over. In 2023, we loved the shimmering folk soundscape they sifted through on Spike Field, and last year they played no small part in helping Cole Pulice’s Land’s End Eternal achieve its wordless, spiritual climax on the album’s closing piece “After the Rain.”

Marathon is their new album—available now via Sacred Bones Records—which on the opening title track contrasts that ambient-attuned lyricism to the more abrasive, all-encompassing weight of drone doom. The rest of the album returns to quieter, acoustic moments, with uneasy distortion and glitches manifesting throughout. Gratefully, it is their diaphanous voice that weaves it all together.

Celebrate the album release with Maria BC and Lucy Liyou at the 4 Star Theater on Thursday, March 12.
