“It’s no good trying to place your hand
Syd Barrett, “No Good Trying”
Where I can’t see, because I understand
That you’re different from me”
My appreciation for Tourist Language—the new album by Flowertown on Paisley Shirt Records—rose from “high” to “utter extremes” at the mini album’s penultimate track, a cover of Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett’s solo song “No Good Trying.” But maybe that’s just showing my biases. The rest of the album features seven pure Flowertown originals, coolly, calmly cradling the band’s signature foggy coastal drive, slow lo-fi winding and unwinding. Check out the music video for “The Ring” and act quick if you want these hazy SF indie pop sounds on vinyl: Of 200 total pressings, this release is down to less than 10.
