This Is a Compilation, Vol. 1 by Various Artists

“I honestly couldn’t believe how many great bands I was meeting with killer songs.” — Kevin O’Connell of Oakland garage punk band The Strange Ones

Stretching out for nearly an hour and a half, This Is a Compilation, Vol. 1 chronicles contemporary independent punk, rock, and alternative music from the Bay Area, with this volume featuring 27 different artists. Some of my favorite selections are the riffy explosive “Paper Pollyanna” by Don’t Tell Kate, the sneering hooky punk of “Cheaper Than Crack” by Normal Weirds, and the dubby funky “Brighter Days” by The New Suburbans. But the collection covers such expansive ground within the alt rock world that everyone is bound to find different favorites.

If this is your sound, definitely check out CuVa Bimö, The Strange Ones, Hypnotic Pattern, and The Lighting Section tonight (Friday, November 22) at the Golden Bull.
