“Ok, we’re on the air live from Lake Merritt in Oakland, California
We’ll have exclusive coverage of Gutfest ’89”
One of the greatest hip hop albums from the Bay is 35 years old! To celebrate the milestone, Tommy Boy Records just released the 35th Anniversary Edition of Sex Packets by Digital Underground as a 180-gram double LP complete with colored vinyl and a rightly ridiculous 3D pop-up studio scene inside the gatefold.
Aside from a reminder to revisit the goofy, G-funk and jazz-inspired beats of the original album—not to mention the sci-fi concept of “sex packets” that one can take to emulate a real sexual experience—the reissue includes a few bonus tracks: “A Tribute to the Early Days” (that sounds lifted straight from Wild Style), “Blue View” (a languid downtempo piano-and-boom-bap piece), radio and instrumental mixes of “The Humpty Dance, and the full-length “Gutfest ‘89” (detailing a fictional festival taking place at Lake Merritt that sounds like a cross between a massive sex orgy and music festival headlined by The Who, The Clash, Digital Underground, EPMD, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Miles Davis).
