Mayya thinks you should listen to any album by Soviet-era rock group Kino

Born in Russia and raised in the Tenderloin, Mayya aspires to create positive, melodic, energetic environments through her music. As a solo act, Mayya has shared the stage with Deerhoof, Shannon Shaw, and Kelley Stoltz, and as a key piece of the local psych rock constellation, she also plays bass with Mae Powell and Mild Universe.

Ahead of Mayya’s set this Friday, May 23rd as part of the Total Accord concert series co-hosted by White Crate, we heard from the artist about her early and diverse musical memories, her thoughts on Bay Area music, and the Russian album we should all listen to.

What’s your earliest memory of connecting with music?

A mix of memories comes to mind: When I was little my mom would put on Sergey Kuryokhin’s “Sparrow Oratorium” every night when I was going to sleep (made for some wild dreams) … Manu Chao drifting thru my dad’s place on a sunny day… Jumping on my mom’s bed listening to Madness “One Step Beyond.”

Where did you grow up? If you moved here, when and why did you move to the Bay?

My family moved here from St. Petersburg, Russia when I was two. I grew up in the Tenderloin in SF.

Infinite Possible Futures (2022) by Mayya

Does living in the Bay Area influence your music?

I think so, in the sense that inevitably our environment shapes our inner worlds. The Bay is varied and eclectic, as is my taste in music.

What do you love about the Bay Area music community?

I love the music community here because people are sincerely supportive of one another. I don’t feel much competitive energy, which I appreciate.

Is there something missing or anything you’d like to see change?

This isn’t just in the Bay, of course, but I’d like to see bands and solo performers receiving much better pay.

The Black Album (1990) by Kino

Do you have any new releases coming up?

I’m working on a new record right now. No release set up yet, but it feels really nice to be taking my time with it and indulging in that creative realm again. This is the first time I’ve started a record with the album title in mind first: “Sleepy Golden Storm”

What one Russian artist/album should we all listen to?

Any KINO record. The first one I got into was the Black Album but truly, I recommend any of them.

Which artist/show are you most excited to see at Total Accord?

I’m excited to see System Exclusive and Luke Sweeney. I’m a longtime fan f Luke’s and look forward to hearing his new tunes. It’ll be my first time seeing System Exclusive.

See Mayya perform alongside Spaceface, The Breathing Room, Outer Sunset, and DJ N0Be at Kilowatt this Friday, May 23rd.
