I once read some random comment by a random person on a random messageboard on the Internet bemoaning the fact that Dark Entries Records keeps releasing music from the Patrick Cowley archives—their argument being that there was a reason that stuff never got released in the 80s. It’s a stupid thing for me to remember, but also a really great reminder to never read random dumb comments by random dumb people on the Internet.
Malebox is the latest gift unearthed by Dark Entries, and it’s a bit of a return: While the last few Patrick Cowley re-releases have focused on his lesser-known alternative sides (like performance troupe rehearsals, extended live funk jams, and erotic gay sex fantasies), this new release sounds like a lot of the artist’s official discography—pure hi-NRG, passionate beats, and disco funk for days.
