“I wanted to make music that would make my listeners dance and have fun again.” Interview with Jammy

Y’all ready for #boysareoutsummer?

We’ve been playing Jammy’s new record
Boysareout nonstop since it came out this spring. The slick production, hyphy beats, and sing-along anthems make it the ideal soundtrack for everything from pre-games with your bestie to blasting at a BBQ with your crew to keeping the party going all night at the afters.

We caught up with Jammy before his performance at El Rio today: Swipe through to find out what Jammy loves about the Bay Area, who he’d love to work with, and why Text Me Records gives him the warm and fuzzies.

What was the inspiration behind your last record Boysareout?

Boysareout was inspired by wanting to have music you could play outside in the club that wasn’t as emotional as the rest of my discography. Coming out of the pandemic, we were all a little nervous to be outside and I wanted to make music that would make my listeners dance and have fun again.

Are there any local legends you’d love to work with?

I’d love to work with Kehlani, Larry June, Lil B and of course the goat E-40. I grew listening to all of these icons and it’s always been a dream to share a record with one.

How does the Bay Area influence the music you make?

I feel like I am most inspired by the carefree nature of how people release music in the bay from artists like Lil B and LaRussell. Musically however, I draw a lot more influence from artists in the UK and LA especially.

Which up-and-coming Bay Area artists are you most excited about?

Michael Sneed, seiji oda and Cilo. I’m gonna put Nate Curry in there too, even though he’s from Sac. These guys have something really special that I can’t wait for world to get more of.

What’s it like working with Text Me?

Working with Text Me has a created a great home team community vibe for me personally that has made me feel like there’s always someone in my corner in this crazy industry. Also just having someone else believe in the records has really helped my overall workflow.

Do you have any new releases coming up?

Yes! Boysareout Deluxe with three more records all produced by Text Me Records’ own Grandbanks. All rock, pretty different from my last release which I’m really excited to share with you guys. With a feature from Ricky Lake on a track called “timepiece.”
