I never thought I’d see an album self-described as “goblincore”, likened to Cocteau Twins, and prefaced by a Lord of the Rings reference all in the same breath. And since I personally resonate with dark whimsicality and all things fantasy, I have no choice but to add this local lo-fi goth band Feedbag’s Flesh Freaks to my list of favorite 2022 releases. With a track title such as “You Think I Ain’t Worth a Goblin But I Feel Like a Million Ghosts,” what is there not to fall in love with? Exhibiting a smattering of grunge-y, bass-y woodland vignettes and endearingly abstract fragments a seemingly benign sprite whispered to herself casually… you may find yourself returning in attempts to reconnect with Kiana Endres’ mysterious energy over and over again. Because 20 minutes is not enough!
