Comes Back to You/Was There Ever Unity? by Unity

The first time I went to a skatepark, I watched my cool new college friends drop in and, having never stepped on a skateboard before, decided I, too, would drop in.

I ended up needing six stitches on my chin. But that’s not the point. No one gave a fuck that it was my first time. If anything, I earned some skatepark street punk cred.

The new album from Oakland band Unity—Comes Back to You / Was There Ever Unity?—reminds me of that time.

Unity’s frontman Jeffrey Cheung is a visual artist, zine maker, and founder of Unity Skateboarding. Some songs lean more punk, others drift into fuzzy indie rock. The vocals are unpolished, and none of it feels like it’s trying to impress. My personal favorite, “Finally,” reminds me of Dinosaur Jr. It’s the kind of record you throw on with your friends and get stupid to.

I can imagine my friends now moshing to Unity. And isn’t that funny? Moshing to unity.

Was there ever unity? Hell yeah, I’m listening to it.
